Covering the bases

It has been an eventful couple of days for the Yankees, who are in the midst of the final game of their series against the Padres. A couple of new signings and a couple of wins…and the usual stuff happening elsewhere.

Yankees: He’s baaaaack. Sir Sidney Ponson (no, really, he is knighted in Aruba) has signed a minor league deal with the Yankees following his release from the Rangers. He pitched for the Yanks in 2006 to a bad result, but he had been pitching better this year. He is a candidate to start one of the games of the twinbill against the Mets. For now, Dan Giese serves as your #5 starter. The Yankees also signed Oneli Perez and sent him to AA. He had to be put on the roster, so Albie was moved to the 60-day DL. He’s not going to pitch again this year because of a stress fracture in his elbow. Perez is unique in that he has 12 fingers. The Yanks have quite the collectable set, don’t they? Pat Venditte, who is an ambidextrous pitcher, and now Perez, the 12-fingered pitcher.

Mariners: The M’s are in the business of cleaning house. First, GM Bill Bavasi was fired. Now Manager John McLaren is headed off into the sunset. Jim Riggleman will serve as the interim manager.

Dodgers: Pitcher Hiroki Kuroda was placed on the 15-day DL.

A’s: Pitcher Santiago Casilla was activated from the 15-day DL. To make room for him, pitcher Kiko Calero was DFA’d.

Brewers: Pitcher David Riske was reinstated from the 15-day DL. Pitcher Julian Tavarez was DFA’d again…he had been signed after being granted his release from the Red Sox earlier this year.

Reds: Pitcher Homer Bailey was optioned to AAA, but he is scheduled to start against the Yankees in the second game of their upcoming series. It is likely he will be recalled for Saturday’s game and face Dan Giese, who is getting his first start for the Yankees. OF Norris Hopper was activated from the 15-day DL.

White Sox: The White Sox announced some draft pick signings: pitchers Aaron Poreda, Leroy Hunt, Nathan Jones, Johnnie Lowe, Kevin Skogley, Levi Maxwell, Thomas Mabee, Daniel Albritton and Ronald Morales, OF James Gallagher, SSs Sergio Miranda, Gregory Paiml and Dale Mollenhauer and 2B Oney Guillen.

Rockies: The Rockies also signed a couple of draft choices, pitcher Christian Friedrich (their #1) and 2B Maikol Gonzalez.

Mets: Now that Willie Randolph is fired, will he still be a coach in the All Star Game?

Angels: IF Erick Aybar was activated from the 15-day DL.

Cardinals: Pitcher Anthony Reyes was placed on the 15-day DL (retroactive to June 16).

Tigers: OF Clete Thomas was activated from the 15-day DL, making the Tigers option OF Brent Clevlen to AAA.

US Open: Tiger Woods’ win at the US Open became just a bit more incredible yesterday as it was announced that he knew that he had a couple of torn ligaments AND a stress fractured knee. Even if you didn’t want him to win, you have to admit that that is pretty incredible.

US WNT: The ladies took down Italy 2-0 very early this morning to advance to the championship match of the Peace Queen Cup. They will face Canada again. Abby Wambach provided all of the offense, giving her 98 career goals. Carli Lloyd played with a mask on to protect the broken nose that she suffered in their previous match against Brazil. Captain Christie Rampone did not play, so Kate Markgraf was the captain for the day. Some of the regulars got their first breathers of the tournament by either not starting or just not playing. Those would be Hope Solo (Nicole Barnhart started and played well in her first game back from surgery), Christie Rampone, Heather Mitts, Abby Wambach (at the very end), Natasha Kai, Shannon Boxx, and Lindsay Tarpley. This let some of the people who hadn’t gotten a chance to play some needed minutes. I managed to stay awake for the entire match, which was nice.

Covering the bases

After the news of their ace going down has had a couple of days to sink in, the Yanks responded with a resounding 8-0 shutout victory over the Padres. Andy was dandy and the Bombers were bombing away. Alright, enough of my little rhyme fun. Catching up:

Yankees: Billy Traber (remember him?) was called up from AAA to replace Chien-Ming Wang (sniff), who was placed on the 15-day DL and is out until at least September.

Mets: The classless Mets FO fired Willie Randolph early this morning and replaced him with Jerry Manuel. Omar Minaya made a disasterous press conference and the Mets lost their game against the Angels. Good day for them. What could be better? Having them re-hire Steve Phillips. They deserve each other…and it’d get him off of Baseball Tonight. See? Works for everyone.

Mariners: GM Bill Bavasi was fired. No surprises there.

Nationals: Pitcher Tyler Clippard was optioned to AAA again to make room for Paul Lo Duca, who was activated from the 15-day DL.

Tigers: Pitcher Fernando Rodney was put on the 15-day DL.

Rangers: Pitcher Sidney Ponson was waived…maybe the Yanks will take another go at him. He didn’t pitch too badly while with Texas. Pitcher Thomas Diamond was activated from the 60-day DL and was optioned to AAA.

Red Sox: Pitcher Bartolo Colon was placed on the 15-day DL with a back problem. Pitcher Chris Smith was recalled form AAA. The Sox also signed a couple of their draft picks. Catcher Christian Vazquez was signed and sent to Rookie ball, while pitcher Kyle Weiland was signed and assigned to A-ball.

White Sox: 1B Paul Konerko was put on the 15-day DL. OF DeWayne Wise got the call in AAA.

Dodgers: Pitcher Brad Penny was placed on the 15-day DL. Pitcher Eric Stults was recalled from AAA.

Rockies: Catcher Edwin Bellorin was sent to AAA to make room for IF Doug Bernier. Pitcher Micah Bowie was moved to the 60-day DL in a move to make room on the 40-man.

Padres: OF Chase Headley was called up from AAA and OF Justin Huber was outrighted to AAA.

NBA: Dang it. The Celtics blew the Lakers out of the water in epic fashion to claim the NBA title.

US WNT: The US WNT finished off Brazil 1-0 at about the same time Willie Randolph was fired. Hope Solo did indeed start in goal and recorded the shutout. Amy Rodriguez scored the only goal of the match. It was a pretty physical game. Within the first 15 minutes, both teams had lost a player to injury. Carli Lloyd took a shot off the nose and broke it. She was removed from the match and Angela Hucles took her place. In only the 7th minute of the match, Brazilian Aline went down with a knee injury and was removed from the match on a stretcher. US team captain Christie Rampone also had to leave the action early with an apparent ankle injury. She is listed as day-to-day, while Lloyd is listed as likely to play in the next match against Italy. No, I do not know why Solo was wearing the US MNT jersey. Your guess is as good as mine. I suppose if I find the answer, I’ll pass the info along.

Sorry, I take that back. He is.

Just got done listening to his press conference and the period that YES would let me watch him speak on Mike and the Mad Dog. During that time, he made absolutely no sense and blamed just about everything under the sun for making the decision to fire Willie.

I am beside myself. This would probably be the time where I pick apart everything he said, but since the whole 40-minute press conference in front of an Angels banner was a wreck in every word that was used, it would be rather pointless…

If you want to hear the press conference, I’m sure you’ll be able to find it on MLB.com soon or on some other site. There’ll definitely be a “highlight” reel on ESPN or Baseball Tonight later.

The Mets are cowards

They just fired Willie Randolph an hour or two ago. After they won. Oh, and did I mention they fired him at midnight my time, so that’s about 3 ET? A couple of other coaches were fired as well. Jerry Manuel will be taking over the managerial duties in the meantime.

Well, I finish up watching the US WNT play and I get to hear about a great guy like Willie getting fired. It’s not that it was unexpected, but come on. Man up and tell the man to his face! Don’t send out an email!

I sure hope that Willie is able to go somewhere that he is more appreciated. He didn’t deserve to be treated the way he has been.

The verdict is in on Wang…and he’s out for at least 10 weeks. Officially, he has a mid-foot sprain of the Lisfranc ligament and a partial tear of the peroneal longus tendon. That means until September or so at least. Terrible news for the Yankees.

So the Yanks have lost their ace for a good while, and perhaps the season. This puts extra pressure on the Yankees’ healthy starting 4 (Moose, Pettitte, Rasner, Chamberlain) to pump out good outings. It also deepens the blow of Phil Hughes being out until August (most likely) and Ian Kennedy being on the DL. Neither Hughes nor Kennedy looked good so far this season, so there will be loads of extra pressure when they do return.

It’s very lucky that the Yankees started stretching out Chamberlain when they did, or they very well could be down to 3 starters. It’s also very lucky that Rasner didn’t get claimed off of waivers and decided to come back to the Yankees because he figured they’d be his best bet to get back on a pitching staff.

Okay, so you’ve lost your ace and have 4 healthy starters. What does this mean? It could signal a couple of things: one, a trade is looking more and more likely by the minute; or two, the Yankees will try to fill the void internally until Kennedy can return. If he fails and Hughes still isn’t back, say hello to a trade.

Likely trade candidates? Let’s take this one person at a time.

C.C. Sabathia. He is going to be getting a lot of attention…and quite a few players if he is dealt to the Bombers.

Randy Wolf. He will actually be starting against the Yankees tomorrow. He’s a southpaw.

Rich Harden. If he can stay healthy, he will require oodles of talent to get.

Joe Blanton. Another player that the A’s will milk for everything. He can eat innings.

Eric Bedard. Bedard has been generating rumours of a potential deal from the Mariners. He’d also require a great deal, considering how much Seattle gave to the O’s to get him in the first place. He doesn’t like the media, so watch out if he actually comes.

A.J. Burnett. The guy from the Blue Jays? I doubt it. They’re not going to deal within the division. He also has that handy opt-out clause for the end of the season.

Kevin Millwood. He could eat about six innings a start.

Vincente Padilla. He’s a roller coaster of a starter, but the Rangers might deal him.

Looking for internal candidates? Look at my previous post. And another note: no, Whitey Ford will not be sitting in George Steinbrenner’s box tomorrow to announce that he’s looking forward to getting back to pitching for the Yankees.

The pitching situation

A huge blow was dealt to the Yankees yesterday as Chien-Ming Wang went down with a foot injury. He is scheduled for an MRI today, but we do not know the severity yet, though we can guarantee that he will be making a trip to the DL if his foot was hurting him as badly as it was. This means that the Yankees are headed for yet more moves, just when they thought that their pitching staff was starting to gell and things were looking up. Wang has been the winningest pitcher since 2006, so this injury really could not have come at a worse time. Well, it probably could have, but I’m feeling dramatic.

When Wang left Yankee Stadium yesterday, his foot was so swollen that he could not put a shoe on it. Right there, that tells you he is out for probably 4 weeks minimum. His right foot is his mount, so he puts his entire weight on it as he goes into his wind-up. The Yankees will be looking for replacements, as Wang was slated to start Saturday. If you want to take a trip over to Peter Abraham’s LoHud Blog, you can find his list of options, but I’m going to make my own. For at least the first start, it will probably mean an internal option will fill the void. Let’s have a look at who could possibly make it:

Option 1: Dan Giese. Why not? Joba Chamberlain will be allowed to go a full 100 pitches in his next start, which is where all of the other starters are at. If a starter gets knocked out early sometime this week, Joe Girardi will likely go to his mop-up man, Ross Ohlendorf, to give the Yanks some innings. Giese had been starting in AAA prior to his call-up, so there’s no reason to believe that he has regressed so much that he couldn’t give the Yanks some solid innings. He has only given up 1 run since he got to the bigs. Why not give him a go? If he doesn’t do well, they could always put him back in what might be his niche, long relief.

Option 2: Kei Igawa. I think he’ll probably get the strongest consideration of anyone down in the minors. Another arm will be brought up for Wang while he is on the DL…might our old buddy be paying a visit to the Bronx soon? Hold your breath, since it is very likely.

Option 3: Ian Kennedy. Probably not going to happen. Kennedy is currently on the 15-day DL, but he will probably need a start or two in AAA before he is ready to come back. And when he does, which Kennedy is going to come back? If it’s going to be the Kennedy that the Yankees have seen for the majority of the year, it’s definitely possible he’s bumped to AAA in favour of someone who could give up fewer runs and work more economically.

Option 4: Jeff Karstens. Karstens has had a rocky road this year. First it was the groin injury, and only a couple of weeks ago, he landed on the DL in AAA. He is healthy now and has been more effective in his past 2 starts. The max number of innings that he would probably be able to give the Yankees would be 5, so you could probably expect Giese to come in if he is picked.

Option 5: Jeff Marquez. After at terrible beginning of the year at AAA, Marquez has started to come around of late. His ERA has gone down considerably, but I do see one glaring problem in his splits: he hasn’t been able to get righties out. They are batting .329 off of him. Yeah, the numbers are skewed, but I would be worried about this.

Option 6: Steven White. I doubt it. He has been absolutely terrible of late and knocked around on a regular basis. There are better options before him, and since he has no ML experience, a call-up is highly unlikely.

Option 7: Chase Wright. Not going to happen. He’s injured in AA.

Option 8: Dan McCutchen. A move on the 40-man roster would be needed to get McCutchen to the Bronx, but he hasn’t had much time in AAA. He struggled a bit early on, but ripped it up in his last outing, going the distance and recording a shutout. However, I don’t think the Yanks want to push him ahead of schedule and risk messing him up mentally in the long term if he gets blown out.

Option 9: Alan Horne. He was out for a good part of his AAA season with a biceps injury, but now he is on the mend and back pitching for Scranton. I don’t think he’s going to be coming up immediately, but he might become a more viable option in a month or so.

Will the Yankees seek a long-term solution if Wang is going to be out longer than a month? It’s probable. The trade deadline is next month, after all. However, for the love of God, DO NOT GET C.C. SABATHIA! Honestly, I do not think he would be a match in New York, especially if he is not signed to a long-term deal…and even then, I would not support it. His physique is not promising and he has a lot of miles on his young arm. Could he prove me wrong? Yeah, but I’m not big on giving up the entire farm plus a ML player or two. Rich Harden is also a likely candidate to be talked in trade, but since he is injured so often and would be milked for every last penny, I’m also not huge on the idea. I guess we’ll see what’s coming soon enough.

Covering the bases

I know, I’m terrible about updating lately. Incredibly busy times right now, but I will make it up to you and analyze some stuff…soon. Procrastinators unite…later!

Yankees: Very bad news for the Yankees today…Chien-Ming Wang injured his right foot (being called a “sprained foot” right now) while running the bases today. Joe Girardi does not think he will make his next start. Wang will undergo an MRI tomorrow in New York, while the Yanks will probably scramble to look for a replacement. Hope Wang heals soon…hm…maybe I can take my guesses at who will pitch in Wang’s place later. Oh, and Shelley Duncan was optioned to AAA so that the Yanks could bring up Alberto Gonzalez for a bit more bench flexibility.

Rangers: Pitcher Kameron Loe was sent back to AAA to make room for AAA call-up pitcher Eric Hurley. Pitcher Kason Gabbard was called up from AAA as well. Pitcher Robinson Tejeda was DFA’d.

Padres: Pitcher Jake Peavey was activated from the 15-day DL. Pitcher Joe Thatcher was optioned to AAA.

Twins: Pitcher Juan Rincon was outrighted to AAA…what happened to him? 3B Brian Buscher was called up from AAA.

Indians: It keeps getting grimmer and grimmer for the Indians. Catcher Victor Martinez was placed on the 15-day DL. 2B Josh Barfield was sent to the 15-day DL as well. Catcher Yamid Haad and IF Jorge Velandia were called up from AAA. To make room, pitcher Jake Westbrook, gone for at least a year with Tommy John surgery, was moved to the 60-day disabled list. Pitcher Oneli Perez was DFA’d.

Angels: SS Brandon Wood was optioned to AAA. Chone Figgins was activated from the 15-day DL.

Royals: Pitcher Carlos Rosa was called up from AAA. Pitcher Brett Tomko got DFA’d.

Mets: How about that? Moises Alou managed to last 2 pitches in his return from the DL…only to be headed right on back there. I guess I shouldn’t have made that joke about him when he was activated…Catcher Robinson Cancel was called up from AAA to fill his spot on the roster. Catcher Raul Casanova and IF Abraham Nunez cleared waivers and accepted assignments to AAA. They also acquired Trot Nixon from the D-Backs just in time to face the Yanks for cash or a player to be named later.

Rays: Pitcher Troy Percival was activated from the 15-day DL, while pitcher Al Reyes is on his way to the 15-day DL (retroactive to May 10).

Tigers: Pitcher Clay Rapada was optioned to AAA. Pitcher Eddie Bonnie was recalled from AAA and made his debut against the Dodgers yesterday.

Nationals: Tyler Clippard was called up again in place of the injured pitcher Odalis Perez, who was placed on the 15-day DL (retroactive to June 4).

Blue Jays: Catcher Gregg Zaun was activated from the 15-day DL. Catcher Curtis Thigpen was subsequently sent back to AAA.

Mariners: Pitcher J.J. Putz was put on the 15-day DL. Pitcher Roy Corcoran was recalled from AAA.

Reds: Pitcher Gary Majewski was reinstated from the bereavement list. Pitcher Danny Herrera was optioned to AAA. They also acquired pitcher Henry Arias from the Royals to complete a previous trade. He was sent to A-ball.

Cardinals: Pitcher Jason Isringhausen was activated from the 15-day DL, but he will not be a closer right now. Pitcher Anthony Reyes was called up from AAA and pitcher Mark Worrell and OF Joe Mather were sent to AAA.

White Sox: Pitcher Esteban Loaiza was placed on the 15-day DL. Pitcher Adam Russell got the call from AAA.

A’s: OF Ryan Sweeney was activated from the 15-day DL. OF Travis Buck was sent back to AAA.

NBA: The Lakers put it together and scraped out a win today to stay alive in the finals. They are now down 3-2 to the Celtics.

US Open: Tiger Woods birdied the 18th hole today to force a playoff tomorrow against Rocco Mediate.

US WNT: The US WNT took down Australia in their first game of the Peace Queen Cup, 2-1. That’s a much better result than their previous two meetings with the Matildas, to say the least. Next up? Brazil. Hm…Hope Solo is probably going to be begging to start in that game to prove a point. Coach Ryan, are you watching?

Well, this is going to be a list for teams other than the Yankees. I’ll show the Yankees announced signees a bit later.

Padres: Pitchers Andrew Albers, Tyson Bagley, Robert Musgrave, Thomas Davis, Nick Vincent, Eric Gonzalez, Nick Schumacher, Omar Gutierrez, Kyle Heyne, Matthew Means, Gary Poynter, Colin Lynch and Brad Brach, IFs Logan Forsythe, Derek Shunk, Joseph Railey, Dean Anna and Matthew Gaski, OFs Sawyer Carroll, Jason Codiroli, Aaron Murphree, Robert Verbick and Dan Robertson and catchers Robert Lara and Logan Gelbrich.

Rangers: OFs Jared Bolden, Jamie McGraw and Rafael Hill, pitchers Cliff Springston, Dustin Brader, Trevor Hurley and Tyler Tufts and SS Edward Koncel.

Twins: OF Aaron Hicks was signed.

Covering the bases

Okay, back with updates, since I’m incredibly behind on them. Slacker. Here we go:

Yankees: Um…ouch? Rasner didn’t exactly have the welcome back to California that we were all hoping for. Ross Ohlendorf and his new mustache made an appearance in the game.

Phillies: The Phillies signed a few of their draft choices: pitchers Michael Stutes, Michael Schwimer, Tyle Cloyd and OF Damarli Saunderson.

Cubs: OF Alfonso Soriano was placed on the 15-day DL with a broken finger. Pitcher Kevin Hart was sent down to AAA, while IFs Eric Patterson and Micah Hoffpauir were recalled from AAA.

Tigers: How the mighty have fallen…the D-Train was sent to A-ball. Pitcher Aquilino Lopez was activated from the bereavement list.

O’s: Darn. The wonderful pitcher named Steve Trachsel was DFA’d. 1B Oscar Salazar is on his way from AAA to join the big club.

Nationals: Pitcher Casey Whitmer and OF Brian Pruett agreed to deals.

Mets: OF Ryan Church is headed for the 15-day DL. OFs Moises Alou and Marlon Anderson were activated from the 15-day DL. OF Chris Aguila was brought up from AAA. Catcher Raul Casanova was DFA’d again. IF Abraham Nunez was also DFA’d. Anyone want to guess as to when Alou will make his next appearance on the DL?

Padres: Pitcher Joe Thatcher was recalled from AAA. Pitcher Wil Ledezma was DFA’d.

Rangers: The Rangers were another club busy signing draft picks. Here’s their list: pitchers Tim Murphy, Joe Wieland, Richard Bleier, Eric Evans, Tanner Roark, Justin King, Ryan Schlecht and Cody Eppley, OFs Joey Butler, Adam Cobb and Chris Dove, catchers Doug Hogan and Kevin Torres and SSs Kyle Higgins and Erik Morrison.

Reds: IF Jerry Hairston Jr. was placed on the 15-day DL. Pitcher Carey Majewski was put on the bereavement list. Pitcher Danny Herrera and IF Jolbert Cabrera got the call in AAA.

Rockies: OF Matt Holliday was activated from the 15-day DL, so OF Seth Smith was optioned back to AAA.

Marlins: IF Robert Andino was called up from AAA. OF Jacque Jones was DFA’d for the second time this season.

Braves: Pitcher Tom Glavine was put on the 15-day DL.

Bad news in this morning while the US WNT is in South Korea, preparing to play in the Peace Queen Cup. This time, it concerns Cat Whitehill, a defender. While training yesterday, she tore the ACL in her left knee and will need to undergo surgery in the next couple of weeks, forcing her out of a chance to play in the Olympics. To take her place on the roster, Stephanie Cox, who was not on the original cut of 22, is headed over to South Korea.

Okay, what is this? 2 of the players I picked to make the squad have gone down with ACL injuries. Last time it was Leslie Osborne. Now it’s Whitehill. The team also has Heather Mitts still working her way back to playing full time after her ACL injury. If she can play full time, she has a definite shot of making it.

Alright. That means I’ve got to make another revision to go with the one I made last week when the Peace Queen Cup roster was announced.

These are the cuts I’m expecting: Briana Scurry, Kacey White, Aly Wagner. That gives you 19 players. 1 more cut. It’s a toss-up between Mitts and Cox for me, just like it was in the very beginning when I said I didn’t think that they would be on the roster (before the injuries). If Mitts is perfectly healthy, I think she gets the nod over Cox. Your thoughts?
